In the past year, the processor market has replenished with a large number of models. Among them there are both very good stones, and those that do not deserve the attention of buyers. We made a top, which included only decent options.
Stone Power: 2020 processor rating by performance
The ranks of computer components are constantly replenished by recruits, and now the choice is so wide that you can pick up a productive stone even in a budget gaming computer at an affordable price. We already wrote about budget and premium gaming PCs. But, perhaps, the processors proposed in the articles are not suitable for someone. Therefore, we decided to make the top processors for purchase in 2020, which will include many models. Let’s start with the budget segment and end with the premium one.
Processor rating 2020: budget models
AMD Ryzen 3 2200G, Ryzen 5 1600, Intel Core i3-9100F
The simplest models of game processors can be obtained at a very small amount. So, for example, Ryzen 3 2200G will cost you only 5500 rubles. This is a great model that has on board integrated graphics Radeon Vega 8. For comparison: the build is behind GT 1030 by 30-40%. We agree that this is a very big difference. Yes, and the GT 1030 is far from a gaming video card, but to begin assembling the first budget computer with the subsequent upgrade of components with the Ryzen 3200G is a good choice. Moreover, for such a low cost, you will also get a boxed cooler in the kit. The base frequency of the model is 3.5 GHz, and in the boost it reaches 3.7 GHz.
By the way, do not forget to choose the appropriate motherboard for this stone, which will have the video output you need. Not all motherboards on the AM4 socket have video interfaces!
4 cores and 4 threads for modern games, of course, is not enough, but you can still enjoy undemanding projects. If you look in the direction of competitors, then in this weight category we will see the i3-9100F. And this is also a good option. Especially if you have a discrete graphics card. This processor is 15-20% more productive, but also has 4 cores and 4 threads.
If you pay only 1,500 rubles, then you can meet Ryzen 5 1600, which will already have 6 cores and 12 threads. The first generation of processors from AMD has fallen in price, although it has good technical characteristics. In terms of performance, this model loses about 20% compared to the i3-9100F. But this is only within the load on 2-4 cores. In games that are able to use 8 or more threads, the “red” processor is ahead of the competitor by as much as 40-50%. A favorite dish of modern AAA games is precisely a large number of streams that are capable of simultaneously processing a lot of information.
Processor Performance Rating 2020: Mid-Segment
AMD Ryzen 5 2600, Ryzen 5 3600, Ryzen 7 2700, Intel Core i5-9400F
In our opinion, the Ryzen 5 2600 is one of the most successful stones in terms of price / quality ratio. We already advised him in the budget assembly, because it is slightly more expensive than the aforementioned Ryzen 5 1600. The difference in cost will be only 1000 rubles, but in return you will get an increased stock frequency and turbo frequency, which even on the boxed cooler takes the mark of 3.8 GHz with a load of 2 cores. All this makes the representative of the Zen + generation 10% more powerful in average. Therefore, even in the simplest game assembly, we would recommend implementing on this model.
Intel as an alternative to the buyer i5-9400F. Traditionally, “blue” stones are more productive with a small number of threads involved. This model was no exception. It costs about 9000 rubles and, on average, is 15% faster than the Ryzen 5 2600. But, as soon as it comes to 8 or more threads, AMD’s stone rushes forward.
We cannot call the i5-9400F a bad processor, but we cannot say that it is very good. If you choose between these competing models, you can stop at any. It already depends on what you want to get. A large number of threads will come in handy not only in games, but also in various programs. A high computing power with a load of 1-4 cores will give a small increase in FPS in games. Therefore, choose what is more suitable for your needs.
So we almost got to one of the most budget 16-core. Ryzen 7 2700 will cost you 11,000 rubles. However, this is the OEM version, which has a small warranty period and is deprived of the cooler in the kit. However, if you take this model for overclocking, then in any case you will have to buy a separate tower.
Also keep in mind that not all motherboards will work stably together with this stone. And this translates into additional costs. 8 cores and 16 threads is very cool, because it is a good supply for the near future, but it seems to us that this model should be considered only if, in addition to games, it also works in heavy programs. Indeed, Ryzen 5 2700 is ahead of Ryzen 5 2600 in multithreaded tasks in terms of performance. But not all modern AAA games are capable of loading a stone in all 16 streams. In 90% of cases, 12 threads will be enough. In the future, of course, everything will change, but then other processors will appear that will be more powerful. However, for some gamers, this model may fit like no other.
Alternatively, if you do not plan to engage in overclocking, you can look towards the first generation Zen, where you will find Ryzen 7 1700 for 11,000 rubles. In terms of performance, it is quite a bit behind Ryzen 7 2700 (about 5%), but this is a boxed version with an increased warranty.
Closes the middle price segment two models. The first is an improved version of Ryzen 5 2600, namely Ryzen 5 3600. These are all the same 6 cores and 12 threads, only with a higher frequency. The increase between Zen2 and Zen + was even greater than between Zen + and Zen. Thus, a fresh processor is 15-20% more productive than its older brother.
The price tag, of course, is more, but it cannot be said that it is overpriced. In our opinion, 11,500 rubles is the ideal price for this model. The heat dissipation of the stone remains at the same level and is equal to 65 watts, so even the boxed cooler that comes with it can handle it. To achieve higher frequencies, traditionally, you will have to get a tower cooler.
In contrast to Ryzen, the competitor prepared the Intel Core i5-9600KF, which has an unlocked multiplier, thanks to which the processor can be successfully overclocked, and which lacks an integrated video core. The version without the F prefix at the end will cost slightly more, but it will have an integrated graphics chip. The cost of the processor is about 14,000 rubles, which is 2500 more than the Ryzen 5 3600. But what do we get in return?
As usual, high performance as part of the load on a couple of cores. In this case, the increase will be 10-15%. However, as you might have guessed, with a large number of parallel calculations, this stone will load more, because it has only 6 cores and 6 threads. Therefore, the i5-9600KF should be taken only if you plan to upgrade the processor in the next couple of years. Indeed, the appetites of games increase every year and the moment is not far off when even 8 threads will not be enough for comfortable gaming, let alone 6. If the processor is bought once and for a long time, then it’s better to choose Ryzen 5 3600 / Ryzen 7 2700. And although the number of frames will be slightly lower, you are guaranteed to forget about friezes and microstatters during the game process, even in the most demanding toys.
Processor Rating 2020: Premium Gems
AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, intel Core i7-9700K, i9-9900KF
If you want to buy a processor and forget about the upgrade for many years, you will have to pay a lot. We believe that in the premium segment the first processor that is worth your attention is the Ryzen 7 3700X. This is an 8 nuclear and 16 threading monster, which in multi-threaded calculations will give odds to many models. In simple tasks, it does not stand out much even compared to the Ryzen 5 3600, but in some demanding games it shows results 20-25% better. For example, in Battlefield V or Watch Dogs 2. But you will not play only these games, right? Therefore, this stone will be appreciated, first of all, by those users who, in addition to games, spend a lot of time in heavy programs.
The situation is similar to the Ryzen 7 2700, which stands out only for its high processing power with all the cores and threads involved. However, it is also a great solution for games.
If the processor is taken exclusively for games and only the frame rate per second is important, then you will have to pay up to the Intel Core i7-9700K, which is 10-15% more powerful than the previous model. However, as with all other processors with an index K at the end, this comparison is valid only when the stone is in overclocking. There are only two downsides to this model. The first is only 8 threads, which may be few in the future. However, this remark is typical for almost all models from Intel. The second is a huge heat dissipation, because of which you will have to buy a very good cooling system.
If this is not enough for you, you will have to pay extra. And, as usual, in the premium segment the level of investments does not always correspond to the profit received. The best gaming processor in 2020 is definitely the i9-9900K. Or its analogue with the prefix F at the end, which does not have integrated graphics. It is, of course, cheaper than the full version, but still very expensive for the average gamer.
In general, this is the same i7-9700K, only this model has 16 threads, which will allow avoiding problems with friezes in the future when the processor is 100% loaded. This, of course, is not the most powerful processor in the world, but this will be enough for any games. Everything that is next is redundant, in our opinion, for modern gaming, and it makes no sense to buy a stone with 12, 16 and a large number of cores. Most of the capabilities of the CPU in this case will not be involved.
Bottom line: which processors should I choose?
This is where our 2020 processor rating for performance ends. If some models are not included in our top, then they either have a high price tag or have poor technical characteristics. List of all CPUs from an article:
- Budget: Ryzen 3 2200G, i3-9100F, Ryzen 5 1600.
- Medium: Ryzen 5 2600, Ryzen 5 3600, i5-9400F, Ryzen 7 2700.
- Premium: Ryzen 7 3700X, intel Core i7-9700K, intel Core i9-9900KF.
