Do not overpay for features that you do not need.

Monitors differ in many ways: diagonal, brightness, response speed, color reproduction. Their importance varies depending on the purpose for which you are buying a thing.

To surf the internet and watch videos

If you use a computer to just sit on social networks and sometimes watch videos on YouTube, you don’t need a sophisticated monitor with high resolution and additional functions. Suitable models costing up to 7 thousand rubles and a diagonal of 19-21 inches. Less than 19 should be taken only if the budget is very limited, and there is very little space on the table.

Full HD resolution is not necessary: on such a diagonal, you are unlikely to notice the difference between it and HD, so you should not overpay. But the aspect ratio is better to choose after all 16: 9 – it is under this format that sites make and shoot videos. That is, the monitor should be rectangular, not square.

These inexpensive models have approximately the same characteristics, so you can choose according to the reviews and how much you like the monitor in the store.

What to buy:

  • Acer EB192Qb – reliable, with good color rendition.
  • Philips 200V4LAB2 / 00 – built-in speakers, no need to buy speakers.
  • HP 20kd – Diagonal is only 19.5 inches, suitable for a small table. Excellent color reproduction thanks to IPS-matrix.
  • The Philips 223V5LSB2 / 10 is just a good, inexpensive monitor.
  • ASUS VP228DE – there are built-in speakers and a blue light filter to make your eyes less tired.

For office work

Office workers with non-specific tasks, such as managers, can buy the same monitors as for surfing the Internet. But since in the office we spend 8 hours continuously at the computer, the ability to adjust the angle and height of the monitor is useful – this will help to strain the neck less. Usually such monitors cost from 9 thousand rubles.

Other functions may be beneficial for health: blue filter, anti-flicker, anti-reflective coating. After a working day, the eyes get tired much less with such a monitor.

For accountants, analysts, programmers and employees who work with large tables, monitors with an aspect ratio of 21: 9 (UltraWide) are suitable. They are wider, so that more information is placed on one screen.

Another useful feature for working is the ability to rotate the monitor vertically. Some people find it more convenient to work with texts and tables. This feature can be useful to copywriters, editors, journalists, lawyers or accountants.

At the same time, it’s not worth overpaying for high resolution, color reproduction or response speed, if you do not work with graphics – in normal office work, all this will not come in handy.

What to buy:

  • BenQ line – monitors with vertical rotation, height adjustment and a blue filter.
  • Dell SE2419H is a low-cost monitor with IPS matrix and tilt adjustment.
  • LG 25UM58-P – monitor with an aspect ratio of 21: 9.
  • LG 24MB37PM-B is a low-cost monitor with built-in speakers, vertical rotation, height adjustment and good color reproduction.
  • Acer K202HQL is an inexpensive compact monitor with built-in speakers. A lot of positive reviews in online stores.

For regular movie marathons

In fact, to watch a movie it is better to take a TV. With the same diagonal size, viewing angles and image quality, it will come out cheaper than a monitor. In addition, TVs are usually better at transmitting dynamic images.

But if you want to take a monitor, be guided by such indicators:

The diagonal is at least 24 inches, and preferably 30, to make it more convenient to watch a movie from the couch or in a large company.

Aspect ratio 16: 9 – most films and almost all series have been shot in it.

Resolution at least Full HD (1 920 × 1,080 pixels). If you are a fan of high quality, you can take a 4K monitor (3,840 × 2,160 pixels). Just keep in mind that you need a powerful graphics card to play 4K movies.

IPS or VA matrix for better color reproduction and high viewing angles – in a large company for those sitting at the edges, the colors will not be distorted.

Wall mount.

The frequency is 75 Hz, and preferably 100 Hz or more, so that dynamic scenes look sharper and more effective. This indicator is not the most important, since at 60 Hz the video usually looks good.

Do not overpay for UltraWide and curved screen. In the UltraWide format, only some films look good, and, for example, you will watch TV shows with black bars on the sides. The curved screen is convenient for one, but if you watch a movie in a company, the image will be distorted at those sitting at the edges.

What to buy:

  • Acer RG270bmiix – 27-inch diagonal, IPS matrix, good brightness and color reproduction.
  • LG 27MK430H-B – 27-inch diagonal, Full HD resolution, there is a wall mount.
  • ASUS VA326H – diagonal 31.5 inches, refresh rate 144 Hz, curved screen.
  • LG 27UD58-B – diagonal of 27 inches, 4K resolution, is cheaper than other monitors with this resolution, but the frequency is only 61 Hz.
  • LG 43UD79-B – a diagonal of as much as 42.5 inches, an IPS matrix, 4K resolution – a complete replacement for television zora.

For artistic tasks: design, drawing, video editing

In such monitors, the main thing is color rendering. It should be maximum so that the colors do not distort. They are best transmitted by the IPS matrix. It has the highest viewing angles – on the side the image looks the same as in front, it is convenient to show work to colleagues.

The cover of the monitor must be glossy. Frosted glare less on the sun, but distort colors too much, so it is not suitable for artistic tasks.

The diagonal should be from 24 inches to fit more elements on the screen. You can even take a monitor with an aspect ratio of 21: 9, so that the work area is even wider.

Frequency in artistic tasks is not so important, so you can not overpay for it. Curved screen is optional. If the budget is limited, you should not overpay for it, but if you have money, you can take it. Then the edges of the image will be constantly visible with peripheral vision – you will not need to twist your head during operation.

For games

In the monitor for the gamer, the frequency is important – 100 Hz for amateurs and at least 180 Hz for professional e-sportsmen, so that the picture is not late for the events of the game.

Other options depend on your gaming requirements:

The TN + film matrix performs better with fast, dynamic images, but its color rendering is slightly worse than that of VA or IPS. The VA matrix responds a little slower and costs more, but it conveys better colors. If speed and economy are important, take TN + film, if the beautiful picture is VA.

If your computer is not very powerful, take a monitor with Full HD resolution – the video card will not stretch anyway. The more powerful it is, the higher resolution is available to you: for 4K monitors, you will need the latest generation video cards, for example GeForce GTX 980 Ti.

Take a closer look at monitors with an aspect ratio of 21: 9 and even 32: 9 and 32: 10. They significantly expand viewing angles and contribute to a deeper immersion in the game, especially if the monitor screen is curved.

For a smoother picture, choose monitors with Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync technologies. They practically do not differ, but they only work with their video cards: G-Sync with Nvidia, and FreeSync with AMD Radeon.

In modern games, there is an HDR mode that improves color reproduction in the light and in the shade. If you want to use this feature, you need a monitor with HDR support.

What to buy:

  • BenQ XL2411P ZOWIE – TN matrix and a frequency of 144 Hz. Cheaper than many other gaming monitors.
  • Samsung QLED C24FG73FQI – VA matrix and curved screen. Color rendering is better, but the speed is lower than that of TN.
  • HP 27xq (3WL54AA) – TN matrix, frequency 144 Hz, supports FreeSync.
  • LG 27GK750F – similar to the previous one, but the frequency is already 240 Hz.
  • LG 34UC79G-B – UltraWide with curved screen and FreeSync technology.
  • Samsung QLED C34F791WQI is a curved UltraWide monitor with very saturated colors, but with a frequency of only 100 Hz.
  • ASUS PG248Q – 4K monitor with 3D support.

General selection tips

Look not only at the specifications: manufacturers sometimes intentionally overestimate them. For example, viewing angles of 178 ° may be declared, but in fact the image on the sides will be distorted. Or the declared diagonal refers to the monitor along with the frames, and the actual diagonal of the screen is half an inch less. It’s better to choose several monitors and find their comparison on the Internet or just look at the store on which image you like more.

Do not take monitors with a curved screen unless you are a pro or a fanatical gamer. They look beautiful, but are too expensive to just watch movies from them and surf the Internet.

In stores, some monitors are called gaming monitors. This does not mean that the monitor is good, suitable for games or not suitable for work. The signature “game” is just a marketing move, and you should not rely on it when choosing.

Many modern monitors do not have DVI-D and D-Sub connectors for connecting to a computer, but only DisplayPort and HDMI. If you have an old computer, make sure that it has the right connectors for the monitor.

In the store, do not let us incur additional services like a paid check broken pixels. You are already obliged to check the monitor on them. And if you find flaws at home, then in any case, you can exchange defective goods.
